Your Apple Watch automatically tracks your steps using a built-in accelerometer to measure your movement. You do not need to start or stop any function for it to count your daily steps.
Find Steps in the Activity App
You can find your step count directly on your watch.
- Press the Digital Crown to see your app grid or list.
- Find and tap the Activity app, which has an icon with three colored rings.
- You will first see your Move, Exercise, and Stand rings. These rings show your progress toward the daily activity goals you have set.
- Scroll down the screen by turning the Digital Crown or swiping with your finger.

- Open the Fitness app on your iPhone.
- On the Summary tab, tap the Activity rings section at the top.
- This screen shows you a calendar view of your activity. After you select a specific day, you can scroll down past the graphs.
- Here, you will find your total steps and distance for that day, along with other health metrics.
- The Trends tab at the bottom of the Fitness app shows you how your activity metrics change over weeks, months, and years.

Add Steps to Your Watch Face
For the quickest access, you can add your step count directly to your watch face. You can do this with a feature called a complication. A complication is any piece of information displayed on the watch face beyond the time itself.
- Press and hold your current watch face until the screen changes.
- Tap the “Edit” button that appears below the watch face.
- Swipe left until you get to the complications screen.
- Tap a complication slot where you want your step count to appear.

Improve Step Tracking Accuracy
You can improve the accuracy of your Apple Watch by calibrating it to your personal stride. This helps the watch learn your unique movement patterns.
- Go outside to an open, flat area with a clear GPS signal.
- Open the Workout app on your watch.
- Choose either an “Outdoor Walk” or “Outdoor Run” workout.
- Walk or run at your normal pace for at least 20 minutes.
- When you complete this calibration workout, your watch uses the data collected from the accelerometer and GPS to provide more accurate step and distance tracking. The data syncs to the Health app on your iPhone, which helps build a complete picture of your fitness.
