BJP and Congress Face Off Over NEET-UG 2026 Leak Controversy

StreamlineBy StreamlineMay 13, 2026

The alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak has triggered a major political confrontation in Rajasthan, with the Congress accusing the BJP government of delaying action because a leader associated with the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) was allegedly linked to the case. The controversy has intensified after the cancellation of the NEET-UG examination and the transfer of the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The issue has once again raised serious concerns about the integrity of India’s competitive examination system. For lakhs of medical aspirants and their families, the latest controversy has become another reminder of how paper leaks and exam frauds continue to threaten the future of students across the country.

Congress Alleges Political Protection in Leak Case

The Congress in Rajasthan has directly targeted the BJP government, alleging that authorities delayed the investigation because a BJYM-linked leader from Jaipur Dehat was allegedly involved in the leak network. According to the allegations, the individual and his brother purchased the NEET-UG question paper from Gurgaon for several lakhs of rupees and later sold it to students in Rajasthan’s Sikar district for profit.

Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully questioned why the Rajasthan government allegedly waited several days before filing an FIR. The Congress claimed that the delay allowed the accused network additional time to destroy evidence or evade investigators. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot also accused the state government of attempting to suppress the issue rather than acting swiftly against those responsible.

The BJP has not officially accepted the allegations made by Congress, and the investigation remains ongoing. No court has yet established the guilt of the accused individuals named in the political accusations.

How the NEET Leak Allegedly Operated

Investigators suspect that the leaked NEET-UG question paper was circulated under the guise of a “guess paper.” Rajasthan Police’s Special Operations Group (SOG) reportedly found that several questions in the circulated material closely matched the actual exam paper. Some reports claimed that nearly 135 questions matched, while other investigations suggested similarities amounting to almost 600 marks.

According to reports, the leaked papers were sold for amounts ranging between ₹10 lakh and ₹25 lakh. Authorities suspect the operation involved a wider interstate network spanning Rajasthan, Haryana, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, and Kerala.

The SOG detained more than 20 individuals during the early phase of the probe. Officials are examining financial transactions, digital communications, and coaching centre connections to uncover the full extent of the racket.

Cancellation of NEET-UG 2026 Sparks National Outrage

The controversy reached a national level after the National Testing Agency (NTA) cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination conducted on May 3. More than 22 lakh students were affected by the decision, creating uncertainty regarding admissions and academic timelines.

The NTA stated that the cancellation was necessary due to credible allegations of malpractice and paper leakage. The matter was later handed over to the CBI for a more comprehensive investigation.

The development led to widespread anger among students and parents, many of whom expressed frustration over repeated exam irregularities in national-level entrance tests. Social media platforms were flooded with demands for stricter anti-cheating mechanisms and accountability from authorities.

Rahul Gandhi and Opposition Intensify Attack

Senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, sharply criticized the BJP-led central government over the controversy. Rahul Gandhi alleged that NEET had become an “auction” instead of a fair examination system and accused the government of failing to protect students’ futures.

Kharge and other Opposition leaders argued that repeated paper leaks across examinations indicate deeper structural failures in the country’s recruitment and testing systems. They demanded accountability from both the NTA and state authorities handling the case.

The Congress also questioned whether political connections influenced the pace of the investigation in Rajasthan. These allegations have added a strong political dimension to what initially appeared to be an examination malpractice case.

Rajasthan Government Under Pressure

The BJP-led Rajasthan government is facing mounting criticism over its handling of the controversy. The opposition has accused the administration of reacting slowly despite early indications of irregularities. Reports also suggested that warnings regarding suspicious “guess papers” were allegedly ignored before the exam controversy escalated.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan Education Minister Madan Dilawar’s remarks describing the cancellation as “not a big issue” drew backlash from students and opposition leaders. Critics argued that such comments undermine the seriousness of an issue affecting millions of aspirants.

The state government, however, maintains that investigative agencies are working independently and that strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty.

Growing Concerns Over Exam Integrity in India

The NEET-UG controversy has once again highlighted the vulnerability of India’s examination system. Competitive exams such as NEET play a decisive role in shaping academic and professional careers, and repeated allegations of leaks severely damage public confidence.

The latest scandal follows earlier controversies involving examination frauds and recruitment paper leaks in multiple states. Experts believe organized cheating networks have become increasingly sophisticated, using encrypted communication channels, coaching networks, and financial intermediaries to operate.

Education experts have urged authorities to adopt stronger digital monitoring systems, encrypted paper distribution mechanisms, biometric verification, and real-time surveillance to prevent future leaks.

Students Face Emotional and Academic Uncertainty

For students preparing for medical admissions, the cancellation has caused immense emotional stress. Many aspirants spent years preparing for the examination, only to face uncertainty due to alleged criminal activities by a few individuals.

Parents and student groups are demanding faster investigations and transparent communication regarding the rescheduled examination process. There is also concern that repeated cancellations and controversies could affect the credibility of India’s national testing framework globally.

As the CBI investigation progresses, attention will remain focused on whether the agencies can identify the masterminds behind the alleged leak network and restore trust in one of India’s most important entrance examinations.
